Tools You Will Need

How To Change A Car Battery

Changing a car battery involves electricity and chemicals, so it’s essential to take precautions. Turn off the engine, remove the keys, and engage the parking brake. If possible, wear gloves and safety goggles to protect yourself from potential spills or fumes while handling the battery.

Disconnect The Battery

Always disconnect the negative terminal first! The negative terminal will usually have a “-” or black cable. Use your wrench to loosen the bolt, then remove the cable. Follow this by disconnecting the positive terminal, marked with a “+” or red cable. This step is important to prevent electrical shorts or sparks.

Remove The Battery

Once the terminals are disconnected, remove any brackets or clamps holding the battery in place. Carefully lift the battery out of its tray, and be very careful because it is much heavier than it looks! Place the old battery in a safe location to avoid leaks or environmental hazards

Install New Battery

Place the new battery in the tray, ensuring that the positive and negative terminals align correctly. Secure the battery with the bracket or clamps to hold it firmly in place. Connect the positive terminal first. Attach the red cable marked with a “+” and tighten the bolt securely. Then, connect the black negative terminal marked with a “-” and tighten it. Apply anti-corrosion spray or petroleum jelly to the terminals to prevent future rust or corrosion.
